Experience

Since 2011, I have served on the staff of the English Department at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. Kennedy is part of the Montgomery County Public School system, one of the nation's most respected education organizations. In my role at our school, I co-manager the Writing Center. Daily, I assist students working on on-level, Honors and the more rigorous IB research papers on matters ranging from dissecting Shakespeare's iambic pentameter schemes to crafting clearly thought out and organized thesis statements to writing cover letters for college applications. Overall, my goal is to help the rising generation familiarize itself with the steps involved in the writing process: topic, research, purpose, audience, outline, point of view, rough draft, edit, sources and final draft. Another vital aspect of my job is helping students become comfortable with literary elements such as plot, setting and mood. I have also worked at the George B. Thomas Saturday School, a non-profit that hires qualified tutors to help young minds with their English and World and American History assignments each Saturday morning for three to four hours. Some of the relevant courses I have taken include Pedagogy, Literary Reading Comprehension, Functional Reading Comprehension and Issues Relating to Special Education. I want to be a tutor because one on one instruction occupies a unique place in the education realm. There is nothing quite like nurturing relationships that rest on a foundation of trust and dedication apart from a large class gathering. I find working with students restorative, refreshing, creative and always surprIsing! Before I became a tutor, I was a reporter, working for many large and small newspapers and radio stations.
