Experience

A former professor of literature and writing and a published author, I have nearly twenty years of teaching and tutoring experience, and have been honored to win Excellence in Teaching awards at two universities. I am very passionate about what I do and approach all of my teaching and tutoring with my trademark enthusiasm and humor. Although I have the expertise and experience that comes with a PhD, I can promise you I am no stuffy academic and will never make you sit through boring lectures or tedious drills. I believe people learn best when they are engaged, when they are lit up and having fun, and when they can see how the subject matter applies to their own lives, and why it matters. I began tutoring as a graduate student, working as a Writing Center tutor at my university, and also for private tutoring companies, helping students with everything from improving their vocabulary to tackle the SAT verbal, to ESOL concerns, to penning the most compelling college essays. During my doctoral studies, I worked as the Assistant Director of University Writing, and continued to work with private individuals in test prep, literature, history, art history, and writing. As a professor, I taught a wide variety of classes, including honors classes and so-called "lab" classes for those in need of extra help, in literature (particularly American literature), expository and creative writing, and philosophy and the arts. I continued to work one-on-one with many students on independent study and capstone projects. All of this occurred at a business university, where my students typically reported they had neither interest nor aptitude in writing, literature, or the arts more broadly. This fact did not deter or discourage me, because of my fundamental belief that with enough enthusiasm and knowledge I can show any student the beauty and power of words, and the skills and strategies to wield that power effectively. I can do the same for you. No matter where you think you are or how much you may be struggling, I can say with certainty that I can teach you to become a stronger, more empowered, more confident reader and writer. I can help bring history, philosophy, and the arts alive for you. Our sessions together will be dynamic and memorable and you will benefit from what you learn far into your future. Please get in touch so we can talk about how I can help you!

Hobbies

I am especially passionate about international travel, cultures, languages, and wildlife. I have enjoyed adventures (and misadventures!) in dozens of countries and hundreds of cities around the world, and have lived abroad on three continents. I now write and speak full-time about my travel experiences, and the business I founded raises money for conservation.
